TAYLORSVILLE, Ind. – The German Township Volunteer Fire Department (GTVFD) responded to a vehicle fire at the northbound I-65 rest park, on Friday, at around 1 p.m.
Crews arrived to find a semi with some flames on the batteries behind the cab. Several truck drivers had used fire extinguishers to keep the small blaze from spreading until firefighters got there.
The fire was quickly extinguished. The batteries and nearby metal were cooled with abundant amounts of water to ensure the fire would not reignite.
The semi-driver stated he had a warning on the dash telling him the diesel particulate filter was full and needed a regen. The driver stopped in the rest park to complete the regen process. After about 40 minutes he noticed smoke coming from the area of the exhaust and batteries, so he called 911.
GTVFD officials said there were no injuries in the incident.
