When Old Houses Become Like Spouses
Nancy Hiller, designer-builder of custom furniture and cabinetry and the author of the book A Home of Her Own, will discuss how making or restoring a home can be a revelatory process, enlightening homeowners as much about themselves as about the structures on which they are working. This phenomenon is all the more evident in cases where a single person–in her book, Hiller focuses on women without partners–is doing the work. In fact, some of the women Hiller interviewed came to see their home as a kind of partner, a development that raises intriguing and rarely posed questions about the meanings of home.
