SEYMOUR, Ind. – The Seymour Police Department (SPD) was dispatched to the 300 block of Parkland Avenue, at around 2 a.m. on Monday, regarding a suspicious vehicle.
An officer responded and identified the operator as Gavin M. Dutton. Police tried to perform a traffic stop, but say the driver accelerated rapidly and a pursuit ensued. Dutton supposedly continued to flee while committing numerous driving infractions, including disregarding stop signs and driving the wrong way on one-way streets.
Several officers from the SPD, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and Indiana State Police joined the chase, which continued for approximately 26 miles and lasted 28 minutes while never leaving the Seymour city limits. At times during the pursuit, speeds exceeded 70 mph.
Law enforcement deployed Stop Sticks to deflate the tires on the car, which finally came to a stop in the front yard of 649 South O’Brien St. A vehicle search allegedly uncovered two glass pipes commonly used for ingesting illegal narcotics and 2.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
Dutton was jailed and charged with possession of meth, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving (high speed), criminal mischief, criminal recklessness, and operator never licensed.
