VERSAILLES, Ind. – Sgt. Stephen Wheeles and Sgt. Bryce Harris (of Columbus) were among several Indiana State Police (ISP) Versailles Post troopers recently honored at the annual ISP Awards Ceremony.
Sgt. Stephen Wheeles received a Bronze Star for his actions while responding to a November 2019 traffic crash that occurred on State Road 11 in Jackson County. A car had driven off the highway into a body of water and the female driver was trapped inside the sinking vehicle. Sgt. Wheeles entered the water, broke the back window of the car, and freed the trapped driver.
Sgt. Bryce Harris and two other troopers were given Lifesaving Awards for their actions at a two-vehicle accident on US 31 in southern Bartholomew County in April 2019. The head-on crash resulted in one driver being entrapped inside his truck, which then caught fire. The troopers worked to control the fire while pulling the driver to safety through the back window.
