INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) says that “Zipper Merge” is coming soon to a construction zone near you.
What this means is that in certain work zones where a lane is closed, drivers should merge late instead of early. Zipper Merges help shorten queue length, reduce congestion, and bring order to the merging process.
Specific signage will be placed for construction zones that use Zipper Merge and INDOT says law enforcement typically helps monitor those work zones. Information is available to help educate drivers, and prior notice will be given for projects using this type of traffic control.
To help understand the process, you can watch a short Zipper Merge video here.
