MONTEZUMA, Ind. – Several Columbus residents reported feeling the ground shake beneath them on Thursday afternoon. If you felt something, you were not imagining it.
An earthquake, centered in west-central Indiana near Montezuma, was confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. It was mostly rumbling in Bartholomew County, but residents closer to the center felt homes and businesses shake.
The earthquake came at 3:18 p.m. and measured a magnitude of 3.8 on the Righter scale, making it the biggest quake felt in Indiana since 2010. The largest earthquake in Hoosier history was a 5.1 in 1909.
In addition to various parts of Indiana, some people in Michigan and Illinois also felt the quake. The accompanying map shows the center and other areas in Indiana and Illinois where residents reported feeling the ground shake.
