COLUMBUS, Ind. – It was a first for the Columbus Police Department (CPD), as far as anyone can remember.
Officers received a call on Saturday, at 4 a.m., about a bulldozer being driven erratically in the area of US 31 and Hawcreek Boulevard. A traffic stop was attempted near 17th Street and Central Avenue.
The driver, Adam Jackson, 26, of Gray, Kentucky, refused to pull over and led police on a pursuit, south on Central Avenue. Law enforcement gave multiple commands for him to stop, but he motored on. Jackson allegedly made several obscene gestures at the officers during the “chase,” which reached speeds as high as 6 mph.
The suspect drove over medians, and at one point, police were concerned that he was going to drive into Haw Creek. Due to his reckless behavior, CPD requested the use of the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office MRAP to use to prevent the bulldozer from advancing into a well-populated area.
Jackson eventually stopped in a Cummins parking lot near Third Street and was arrested without any further incident. He told officers that he was “joyriding.” The man was taken to Bartholomew County Jail and charged with resisting law enforcement, vehicle theft, and criminal recklessness.
