COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus Regional Health (CRH) has recently released a detailed explanation of the difference between a COVID-19 “third shot” and “booster shot.”
A “third dose” is recommended for those with compromised immune systems that do not build adequate or lasting protection from the virus, especially variants. The CDC recommends that they get a third shot of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at least 28 days after the completion of the initial two-dose series.
A “booster dose” is given to someone who built enough protection after initial vaccination but that protection has decreased over time. Because of the highly contagious Delta variant, COVID-19 booster doses are recommended to prevent waning immunity in vaccinated individuals. They should be available in the fall of 2021.
To answer questions and provide clarity, a complete outline of who should get a “third shot” or “booster shot” and when those people should get them is available on the CRH Facebook page.
