SEYMOUR, Ind. – The Seymour Fire Department was dispatched last Friday, June 6, to a structure fire with one victim who had suffered burns.
When firefighters arrived, they observed smoke coming from the home. Crews executed an aggressive interior attack, extinguishing the small blaze minutes after arrival. One resident was treated and transported by Jackson County EMS to Schneck Medical Center for evaluation.
The investigation determined that a resident was attempting to cook fried chicken in an oil-filled pot on the stovetop. The cooking oil was extremely hot, reached its ignition temperature, and burst into flames.
Another resident tried to put out the fire by throwing a bowl of water on it, but that caused the blaze to grow rapidly.
The resident who was cooking the chicken attempted to remove the flaming pot from the residence. Due to the extreme heat, the occupant dropped the pot of chicken and grease on the dining room floor and carpet, which led to a fire in the dining room and caused several burns to the resident.
