COLUMBUS, Ind. – A single-family home sustained heavy fire damage on Sunday afternoon in the 2600 block of Pearl Street. Investigators are working to find the cause of the blaze.
The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) was called to 2689 Pearl St. at around noon when neighbors reported a house on fire. Columbus Police officers were first to arrive in the area and reported thick black smoke visible.
When firefighters got there they saw flames shooting from the rear of the home. As one crew attacked the fire at the back of the residence, another entered through the front entrance and began a search of the home.
After successfully knocking down the flames at the rear of the home, CFD concentrated on the front of the home. The fire attack and search teams encountered smoke and high heat as they worked to control the fire.
After finding no occupants within the home, firefighters applied water to the fire that had extended into the home’s attic. The blaze was brought under control within 25 minutes.
A family member who lives in the neighborhood confirmed that the owners were away from the home. A family pet was also in the care of that family member while the homeowner was away.
CFD officials said fire, smoke, and water damage to the home was extensive. The cause is still under investigation. Damages are estimated at $75,000. No injuries were reported.
