Indiana's gas tax holiday will expire on Thursday, gas prices will rise 60 cents a gallon

INDIANAPOLIS - Drivers are advised to fill up by Thursday night, because State officials say Indiana's temporary gas tax relief is expiring. That means normal state fuel taxes return on Friday.

The suspension ends on Thursday, August 6, as prices will change at the pump. In an emergency order, Gov. Braun announced the temporary relief four months ago, and lower gas prices went into effect on April 8.

He renewed the policy a couple of times, but by law, a governor's order cannot extend it again. Another renewal would have to come from the state legislature.

Hoosiers have enjoyed the lowest gas price in the nation for the last two months.

Beginning Friday, August 7, the 7% state sales tax and the 36-cent gasoline excise tax will no longer be suspended under the emergency order. Moroists will lose the previous savings of about 61-62 cents a gallon.
