SCOTT COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana State Police (ISP) responded to a reported shooting just after 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 19, on northbound Interstate 65 near the 27‑mile marker, a few miles south of Scottsburg in Scott County.
Scottsburg Police Department officers, Scott County Sheriff’s Department deputies, and Indiana State Police troopers arrived on scene within minutes.
The preliminary investigation indicates the shooting stemmed from an apparent road rage incident. All parties involved remained at the scene following the event.
Investigators have initially determined that a pickup truck driver allegedly shot a man driving a car after both vehicles came to a stop in the left lane of the roadway.
Scott County EMS transported the victim to Norton Scott Hospital before being flown to the University of Louisville Hospital, with life‑threatening injuries. His identity is not being released at this time.
Following the initial investigation, the driver of the truck, identified as James Camden Dowdell, 28, of Shelbyville, Kentucky, was arrested for attempted murder (Level 1 Felony). Dowdell was transported to the Scott County Jail.
Indiana State Police troopers and detectives have assumed the investigation, which remains ongoing.
As a reminder, a criminal charge is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
