State Police search for 3rd vehicle involved in school bus accident

INDIANAPOLIS - Late Tuesday, September 29, Indiana State Police (ISP) Detectives and Crash Reconstructionists continued investigating an earlier crash involving a school bus and an ISP pickup truck.

After reviewing camera footage, investigators now better understand what happened and are actively looking for a third vehicle involved. That vehicle is an older Blue Honda minivan (accompanying photo).

The bus, the minivan, and the ISP pick-up truck were all entering I-465 northbound from Washington Street. The bus was in front, followed by the van and the ISP pick-up. As the bus and minivan merged onto I-465, both moved into the center lane at the same time. The van then moved to the left lane and was passing the bus. As it cleared the front of the bus, the bus driver made an evasive maneuver to the right and struck the right rear of the ISP vehicle, which was in the lane to the right of the bus.

That collision caused the pickup to slide sideways and impact the concrete median barrier head-on. The bus then slid sideways and tipped onto the driver's side, resting partially on the median wall. Investigators do not believe the van hit the bus; however, detectives want to speak with the minivan's driver about what occurred.

ISP Detectives are using all available technology and resources to identify and locate the minivan's driver. Anyone with information about this vehicle or who knows its whereabouts is asked to call the Indiana State Police at 317-899-8577.
