Columbus addresses E-bike safety concerns on People Trail

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The City of Columbus is evaluating the Columbus People Trail safety regulations after public feedback regarding the rise of motorized transportation devices.

Officials discussed ongoing interdepartmental efforts during the open comment portion of the city council meeting on Tuesday, September 15.

Residents addressed the council to express concerns about high-speed electric bicycles and e-scooters on the multi-use trail system, highlighting potential risks to pedestrians and calling for updated speed limits, improved trail signage, and targeted safety education.

In response, city administration confirmed that a dedicated working group—including representatives from the Columbus Police Department, Parks Department, Planning Department, City Council, and Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation—is actively drafting ordinance updates.

Proposed measures focus on path etiquette, structural trail design adjustments, and community safety outreach.

City officials expect the working group to present formal ordinance recommendations and trail management strategies to the City Council later this fall.
