COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) says a leadership transition is underway as Deputy Chief Mike Kutsko returns to frontline emergency operations within the Fire Suppression Division.

Kutsko requested the voluntary reassignment after serving 14 years in CFD administrative leadership.

"This decision was made following thoughtful consideration of what is best for my wife, my family, and the Columbus Fire Department in the years ahead. Serving as Deputy Chief has been an incredible honor, but balancing the demanding administrative schedule with family life requires a shift in focus," said Deputy Chief Kutsko.

As deputy chief of operations, Kutsko oversaw numerous programs and initiatives. He championed enhanced mental health, wellness training, and work performance evaluations to assess firefighters' physical readiness. He also worked with local organizations and businesses to strengthen safety and community resilience planning.

Fire Chief Andy Lay also announced the appointment of Capt. Ben Spencer as deputy chief of administration. Spencer has led the department's training division since 2019.

"Ben has done a tremendous job leading our training division. His attention to detail and vast knowledge of the fire service will allow a seamless transition to fill a critical position with Chief Kutsko's departure from administration," said Lay.

The leadership transition takes effect Monday, Nov. 2. Kutsko will assume the rank of lieutenant, a position he held before joining the department's administration.

Spencer's appointment creates a vacancy within the training division. Lay said the department will select its next training officer in the coming weeks through an internal candidate selection process.
