FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Franklin Police Department announced Friday that the grand jury returned an indictment in a case that began 20 years ago. Chynna Dickus, 26 at the time, and her 10-year-old stepson were stabbed to death in their home in the Branigin Woods neighborhood in Franklin on July 24, 2006.

Michael Jerome James, 35, was indicted for the long-standing murders. He was a teenager when the crimes occurred.

Franklin Police Chief Kirby Cochran released a statement about the indictment which said in part:

"For 20 years, Blake and Chynna’s families have carried the weight of an unimaginable loss, waiting for this day. On behalf of the Franklin Police Department, I want them to know that we have never forgotten their loved ones and we have never stopped seeking justice. Our detectives and investigations division never gave up and refused to let the case grow cold. Their sustained effort brings a measure of resolution for the victims, their families, and our community.

This indictment represents the culmination of 20 years of persistent and professional investigative work. I extend the department’s deep appreciation to every officer, detective, and law enforcement agency who contributed to this investigation over the years, including Captain Jeff Dawe, the Johnson County Prosecutor's Office, and Mayor Barnett.

The Franklin Police Department will continue to assist the Prosecutor’s Office as needed and will fully respect the integrity of the legal process. We will remain committed and engaged until justice is served."
