GREENWOOD, Ind. - The Greenwood Fire Department (GFD) has officially joined the top tier of public safety agencies nationwide, earning an ISO Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office.
Chief Jayme Washel announced the milestone during the August 28 Merit Commission meeting, revealing the department achieved a score of 92.15, a six-point increase over its previous rating.
Over 37,000 fire departments are evaluated across the United States every five years, and only 517 (1.4%) hold an ISO Class 1 distinction. GFD is one of just four fire agencies in Indiana to reach the standard.
ISO ratings evaluate structural fire protection capabilities based on water supply, response times, staffing deployment, and dispatch operations.
The Greenwood Fire Department will host a formal certificate presentation ceremony on Tuesday, November 3, at 10 a.m. at Station 95.
