COLUMBUS, Ind. - The death of a Taylorsville man is being investigated by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) after a house fire in the 1800 block of W County Road 650 N on Sunday, February 8.

BCSO responded to a residence fire just before 3 p.m. Callers reported a large amount of smoke coming from the residence.

Upon arrival, deputies and an Edinburgh Police Department patrolman entered the residence to check for occupants, but were forced to turn back due to heavy smoke. Members of the German Township Volunteer Fire Department, Edinburgh Fire and Rescue, and Columbus Township Fire Department began fighting the blaze.

As fire personnel were working the fire, a male victim, later identified as Mark Streeval, 54, of Taylorsville, was located in a back bedroom of the home.

Because of the challenging conditions, the man had to be extricated through a window. The victim was at first found to have no pulse; however, it was regained after on-scene medical intervention.

Streeval was transported by ambulance to Columbus Regional Health and later flown by Lifeline helicopter to Eskenazi Hospital. He later died while continuing to receive treatment.

At this time, the joint investigation is ongoing to determine the cause and manner of the fire. The cause and manner of death also remain under investigation.
