Mayor Ferdon reflects on accomplishments, looks 'Forward' during State of City Address

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The 2026 City of Columbus State of the City Address commemorated Columbus's accomplishments and looked "Forward" to the future at the Commons on Tuesday night, February 10

Following the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, Mayor Mary Ferdon centered her address on the theme "Forward."

Mayor Ferdon began by thanking first responders for their exceptional response during the severe weather in the spring, including the devastating flooding in April and multiple tornadoes in May.

The Mayor then further elaborated by recapping the city's accomplishments in 2025. Some of these accomplishments included the PACT and CHIP home improvement projects, providing affordable housing (Flats on 14th and Hawcreek Meadows), and the creation of the Homeless Task Force spearheaded by United Way. 

She praised the upcoming transit center improvements in March, including a color-coded 'loop' system, the relocation of several transit stations, and alterations to existing routes, in response to public feedback.

Other accomplishments mentioned included the construction of the new and improved airport tower at Columbus Municipal Airport, the groundbreaking of the new Wendy H. Elwood Animal Care Shelter, the Downtown 2030 project, and the upcoming completion of the Riverfront construction later this year

After thanking City of Columbus employees, Mayor Ferdon gave the floor to Srikanth Padmanabhan, a Quest representative. Its mission is to make Columbus "the best community in the nation." Padmanabhan discussed arriving in Columbus in 1991 to work at Cummins and now planning the next 35 years to improve the City.

He compared the ambitious goal of Quest to John F Kennedy's famous "moonshot" speech and emphasized three main pillars crucial to helping the city achieve this goal, including:

• Economic Stability 
• Education/Talent
• Sense of Place

Mayor Ferdon delivered the closing remarks and concluded her State of the City address by saying, "I believe the people of Columbus always strive to uphold the best ideas of our nation."
