COLUMBUS, Ind. - Mill Race Theatre Company (MRTC) brings "The SpongeBob Musical" to the stage Thursday through Sunday, July 16–19, at the Columbus East High School Auditorium.
The production features a live orchestra performing an eclectic rock and pop score written by legendary artists including Panic! at the Disco, Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, David Bowie, and more. Audiences will also experience live, onstage foley sound effects.
An all-ages community cast brings Bikini Bottom to life through imaginative costumes inspired by the characters rather than cartoon replicas. The Sardines ensemble utilizes a shared American Sign Language vocabulary developed in collaboration with an ASL coach to create a distinctive visual language on stage.
“The cartoon humor is all there,” says director Kevin Earnest. “But this show asks these characters to grow. SpongeBob has to figure out who he is when optimism isn’t enough. Patrick has to choose between the comfort of being liked and the harder work of showing up for his friends. Those are real, human questions, and our cast is treating them that way.”
