North Vernon board addresses cul-de-sac controversy on Woodfield Court

NORTH VERNON, Ind. — The North Vernon Board of Public Works and Safety addressed local residents' growing concerns over street navigation and engineering standards in the Woodfield Court cul-de-sac during its meeting on Thursday, September 24.

Residents presented safety and access issues caused by the center grass island located in the cul-de-sac, citing daily difficulties for trash trucks, delivery drivers, street sweepers, and school bus turnarounds.

Tim Hunt with HWC Engineering confirmed that the cul-de-sac with the island in place does not meet current industry engineering standards for dead-end turnarounds. However, another neighborhood resident expressed opposition to removing the island, emphasizing that the homeowners association (HOA) has maintained the area for over two decades and values its aesthetic appeal.

The street resurfacing project is tied to a 2027 Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG) application that is currently awaiting state approval.

Mayor Shawn Gerkin clarified that if state grant funding is approved, the city plans to survey and poll the six households immediately surrounding the cul-de-sac to determine the preferred solution. City officials confirmed that because it is a public right-of-way, the street is under city jurisdiction.
