NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The North Vernon Police Department (NVPD) has been conducting a special traffic enforcement campaign targeting high-risk areas throughout local school zones.
Led by local law enforcement officers, the initiative involves extra patrols arriving early in the morning to intercept reckless drivers and protect students during drop-off hours. Officers are focusing primarily on catching speeding drivers and penalizing school bus stop violations.
“Officers have been coming in early in the morning to curtail speeding and school bus stop violations in school zones,” said North Vernon Police Chief Keith Messer at Monday's city council meeting. “That’s all been paid for by the grant which we received through Operation Pullover.”
The high-visibility enforcement effort aims to increase safety around schools as the academic year gets underway, utilizing targeted grant funding to cover officer overtime and extra patrols without impacting the local municipal budget.
