COLUMBUS, Ind. - The City of Columbus-Bartholomew County Planning Department will host a public open house and input session on Wednesday, October 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Cal Brand Meeting Hall at Columbus City Hall.
At the meeting, discussions will center on the proposed revisions to the city's zoning ordinance.
The draft changes focus on expanding the range of housing types permitted throughout the community, reducing certain development standards, and updating regulations to support “missing middle” housing such as duplexes, triplexes, and small apartment buildings.
The revisions also address parking requirements, permitting procedures, and several other ordinance elements.
A review of Columbus’ current zoning regulations in the 2024 City of Columbus Housing Study found that while existing rules are not major barriers to development, they could more effectively support diverse, market-based housing options. The study also concluded that increased housing density is needed to meet future demand.
To align zoning regulations with these findings, the proposed revisions update residential zoning districts, minimum lot sizes, design standards, and the zoning map.
Residents may review detailed materials outlining the proposed changes on the Planning Department website. The Planning Department will accept public comments at the open house and through the online comment form.
