Columbus firefighters temporarily relocate due to ongoing moisture concerns

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Following ongoing moisture issues at the facility, the Columbus Fire Department (CFD) has temporarily relocated personnel from Fire Station 5 on Thursday, July 16.

Fire Station 5, located at 100 Goeller Court, has experienced persistent moisture accumulation inside the living quarters of the 40-year-old building. Over the past two years, firefighters have reported water-stained ceiling tiles, peeling paint, and frequent window condensation.

Multiple efforts have been made to correct the issues, including installing a new HVAC system and repairing several roof and window-seal problems.

Despite these efforts, moisture continues to accumulate. CFD is awaiting a comprehensive evaluation from a professional remediation specialist to determine the full extent of the problem and identify necessary corrective measures.

The City of Columbus Facilities Department has been working closely with the Fire Department to pinpoint potential sources of excessive moisture and assess structural impacts.

“As the Chief of Fire, one of my greatest responsibilities is to protect the health and safety of our personnel. We want to ensure the moisture issues are fully addressed before the station is reoccupied,” said Chief Andy Lay.

To maintain uninterrupted service to residents, Station 5 personnel have been reassigned to Columbus Fire Station 6, located at 1900 W. 450 S., where they will operate until remediation is complete.
