2nd Street water main, storm sewer repairs start this week

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The City of Columbus has announced that beginning Tuesday, September 1, and continuing through Tuesday, September 8, crews will ramp up work on water main and storm sewer improvements on Second Street, between Jackson and State Streets.

The project will require temporary road closures and lane restrictions. Most traffic impacts are expected to occur overnight to reduce disruptions for motorists.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, workers will line-stop the 8‑inch water main at Second and Washington Streets and retire the section of the main serving the east end of Second Street. Once it is retired, crews will install a new storm sewer inlet at Sycamore Street.

On the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 8, crews will install a 36‑inch storm sewer across Second Street. During this work, Second Street will be closed at Jackson Street. The installation is expected to take one night. While the street is closed, traffic will be rerouted north on Jackson Street or south on First Street to Franklin Street.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution in the area, follow posted detours, and expect periodic delays throughout the project period. 

The completion timeline is weather-dependent. Inclement weather may delay progress within the designated schedule.
